Tunkalilla Vineyard Riesling2013 Vintage

Production
203 cases made.
Harvest date
10th/11th October 2013
Harvest Heat Summation
2362ºF days (average-2466ºF days)
Wine Analysis
Alcohol 11.69%, Acid 8.7gpl, pH 2.85, Sugar 7.9 gpl.
Description
Consistent with the first 5 vintages at Tunkalilla Vineyard, 2013 growing season (the 6th) was cooler than average but warmer than all but the 2009 vintage (2406° F days).

2013 was the most difficult vintage of the 6 because of the 5 inches of “pineapple express” rain that fell three weeks before harvest. This caused berry split and botrytis was evident. We picked selectively around the botrytis to produce a small volume of 2013 Tunkalilla Vineyard Riesling.

Because 2013 was relatively warmer than the previous vintages the wine is the driest we have yet made at 7.9gpl of sugar.

2013 Tunkalilla Vineyard Riesling has the typical terroir driven orange blossom and peach aroma and flavour but with the added complexity of the bathpowder and honey of botrytis influence.

The wine is exquisitely balanced between fruit flavours, sugar and acid with a dry finish.

2012 Vintage

Production
530 cases made.
Harvest date
12th/19th October 2012
Harvest Heat Summation
2246ºF days (average-2493ºF days)
Wine Analysis
Alcohol 11.81%, Acid 8.0gpl, pH 2.94, Sugar 11.4 gpl.
Description
The first five vintages at Tunkalilla Vineyard (2008-2012) have all been cooler than average although 2012 was the second warmest of the five after the 2009 vintage.
The very dry and moderately warm vintage combined with the 7- year vine age has produced a wine with strong, ripe Riesling flavours. Unusually the acid was lower than the previous vintages, probably because of the high level of sunlight hours of the 2012 vintage.
The 11.4gpl of residual sugar combined with the ripe flavours, balances the modest 8gpl of acid achieving a dry finish.
The ripe Riesling aromatics are of orange blossom, passion fruit and mango and while the flavour is ripe and intense it is also refined.
2012 Tunkalilla Vineyard Riesling is another slightly surprising expression of this unique terroir.

2011 Vintage

Production
300 cases made.
Harvest date
26th October 2011
Harvest Heat Summation
2055º days (average-2493ºF days)
Wine Analysis
Alcohol 9.4%, Acid 11.6gpl, pH 2.80, Sugar 39.5gpl.
Description
2011 Tunkalilla Vineyards Riesling is from the latest vintage yet and matches the very cool 2010 vintage as the two coolest vintages of the Oregon wine industry's history.
The very high natural acid of the 2011 Riesling had to be balanced with the higher sugar level of 39.5gp. Despite our best intentions to make dry Oregon Riesling the seasons have conspired against this ambition. However the dry finish of this exquisitely balanced wine is consistent with the terroir determined Riesling style of the Tunkalilla Vineyard expressed over the 4 vintages made.
The fruit aromatics are delicately poised between citrus blossom and subtle tropical fruit, typical of the Riesling variety grown in a highly suited cool terroir.

2010 Vintage

Production
260 cases made.
Harvest date
23-10-2010
Harvest Heat Summation
2037º days (average-2493ºF days)
Wine Analysis
Alcohol 11.5%, Acid 9.9gpl, pH 2.96, Sugar 17.6gpl.
Description
The 2010 Tunkalilla Vineyard Riesling is the product of one of the coolest and latest vintages in Oregon. The higher natural acid and refined aromatics of this cool vintage wine demanded to be balanced by slightly more retained sugar than the previous vintages. Despite the higher residual sugar the wine still retains the dry wine profile which is the natural balance of Rieslings from the special Tunkalilla Vineyard terroir. The fruit aromatics are perfumed and limey and intensely fresh.

2009 Vintage

Production
380 cases made.
Harvest Date
11-10-2009
Harvest Heat Summation
2406ºF days, (average-2493ºF days)
Wine Analysis
Alcohol 12.9%, Acid 9gpl, pH 2.96, Sugar 11.5gpl.
Description
2009 Tunkalilla Vineyard Riesling is from a vintage just cooler than average and significantly warmer and earlier than 2008. The heat summation for 2009 was 2406º F days versus the average of 2493ºF days. The warmer vintage has introduced some peach and tropical aromas to go with the floral and citrus and the flavours are richer and less savoury than for the 2008. A trace more residual sugar complements the fruit sweetness and offsets the natural acid.

2008 Vintage

Production
250 cases made.
Harvest Date
19-10-2008
Harvest Heat Summation
2124ºFdays, (average-2493ºF days)
Wine Analysis
Alcohol 13.14%, Acid 9.6gpl, pH 3.00, Sugar 8.6gpl.
Description
2008 Tunakalilla Vineyard Riesling is the first crop from this special Riesling terroir. From a much cooler than average vintage the aroma is fresh and delicately floral with a hint of citrus. The natural acid is high and the residual sugar relatively low so the taste is flinty and dry but with significant fruit sweetness to balance.

These wines are a pure expression of a unique terroir. BJC
